Chevrolet Camaro (1966-1969)

Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro Chevy was more than the answer to the Ford Mustang. The Chevrolet Camaro is a "pony car" made in North America by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors. It was introduced on September 26, 1966 as a model year 1967 and was designed as a model to competitors Ford Mustang. The car shared the platform and the main components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced in 1967. Four generations of different vehicle occurred before production ended in 2002. A new Camaro is expected to roll off assembly lines in January 2009.

First generation (1966-1969)

1966 Chevrolet Camaro

The first generation Chevrolet Camaro debuted in September 1966 for the model year 1967 to 1969 on a new rear wheel drive GM-F-body platform and will be available as a 2-door, 2 +2 seating, coupe or convertible with a choice of line-6 and 327cid,350cid, 396cid or 427cid V8 power. Concerned with the great success of the Ford Mustang,Chevrolet executives realized that its compact sports car, the Corvair, would not be able to generate the sales volume of the Mustang because of its radical design of the rear engine and the decline in sales, partly due to the bad publicity from the book by Ralph Nader, insecure ny speed. Therefore, the Camaro is promoted as having the same rear of the unit conventional front-engined configuration and Chevy as Mustang II. In addition, the Camaro was designed to accommodate a variety of power plants in the engine bay. The first generation Camaro will last until model year 1969 and eventually inspire the design of the new fifth-generation Camaro retro.

1967 Chevrolet Camaro

The inaugural 1967 Chevrolet Chevy Camaro has been home to four "personal" car, it was in response to the limited but significant success of the blade-seated Corvair Monza - and, of course, the surprising popularity of the Ford Mustang phenomenal.

Single-leaf rear springs resulted in an "axis tramp in hard acceleration with the largest V-8 engines, so that vehicles with traction bars. Chevy's 230 cubic inches was six standard, with an optional 250-cubic-inch six. The V-8 selection began with 210 - and 265 horsepower-327s, and then spread all the way to a large-396 cubic inches, 375 horsepower V-8 with four-barrel carb and compression of 11:1.

Biannual brought an SS 350 with an edition of 295-horsepower V-8 and "bumblebee striping nose. Meanwhile, a Rally Sport (RS) package offered style headlamps hidden.

Despite promoting Camaro oriented man as machine, especially with a hot V-8 under the hood, one in four buyers is a woman. A long list of accessories and options allow customers to customize the car. Covers of vinyl roofs were optional in coupes.

The first year of the total production of 220917 vehicles (162109 engine with a V-8). That was less than half of total Mustang, but all the other five lines of cars Honda saw decreased production. Chevrolet also issued 602 of the race Camaro Z28s bred with a 302-cubic-inch V-8 nominally rated at 290 horsepower, but capable of much more.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1968 Chevrolet Camaro suffered some changes in the suspension, as the continuous improvement is a big part of the image Camaro. New staggered shocks helped reduce the trend towards "axis tramp", which had struck early high-performance editions, and the rear suspension travel is increased to reduce the likelihood that Camaro "bottoming out".

SS Camaros now includes front disc brakes. Four-wheel disc brakes are available as a "service option" in the Z28 version to the best career stop power. Camaro shores of sales has been rising, with 235151 cars built this year (7199 Z28s), while sales of rival Ford Mustang immersed in the afternoon sixties.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, nicknamed "hugger", received a large body of minor facelift that brought a new bumper and grill, parking lamps round, and a tail reformed. Wheelbase remained at 108 inches, but el'69 agency expects longer and lower.

Anyone dissatisfied with the standard six-cylinder 210 or 327 horsepower V-8 has some tempting options to consider. A pair of 350-cubic-inch V-8s graced the list of options, like the Turbo Jet 396s shut down 325 to 375 horsepower.
Super Sport Camaros had a new Turbo 300 horsepower Fire 350 V-8 residing beneath a hood with simulated ports. Also included with the SS option, which could be ordered in combination with the RS, are black doorway moldings, a special suspension and tires F70sxs14.

Production increased slightly to 65008 and 178087 six-cylinder V-8 Camaros - hardtops and convertibles - starting at $ 2638. The total included 19024 Z28s (much more than in 1967-68). Once again rated at 290 horsepower, but actually much stronger, 302-cubic-inch engine Z28 now inhaled through a "cowl-induction" mounting rear-faces ball. Dual-tone throaty exhaust, a stiffer suspension, 15-inch wheels, Hurst linkage, and large swathes completed the Z28 image.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

It was not the fastest car muscle, but with the unique style of the season and a unique combination of brake, engine, exhaust and induction options, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was arguably the most desirable of all Z28.

The addition of $ 458 to $ 2726 the base price of a Camaro coupe, RPO Z28 include the manipulation of F41 suspension with raised-letter tires E70X15 seven inches wide tires, direction faster, and double rally stripes. Front disc brakes are standard on the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, and for the first time, four-wheel drives were offered. They cost $ 500 and will only be handed over 206 games, about half goes to full race cars.

The elevator solid-302-cid V-8 with a 850-cfm four barrel carburetor was again exclusive to the Z28. Dynamometer trials in about 400 horsepower made a joke of his qualification of 290-horsepower. -- Dealer installed double-barrel carburetor four options were offered even the'67, and for'69, $ 500 for purchase of 600 cfm twin Holleys through multiple framework, although no change to the qualification of 290 - horsepower.Exhaust - perhaps the least restrictive exhaust increasingly offering Chevy - were also available.

Another option only functional 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28s was $ 79 cowl-induction hood. It had a valve open snapped at 80 percent - the regulator of fresh air drawn from the base of the windshield.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28s only came once again Hurst with a close-ratio four-speed happened; 3.73:1 gears were standard, with up to 4.10:1 gears available.

Styling could improve the Rally Sport package, which won for his transparent louvers hidden-headlamp covers.

Handling is razor-sharp, with the help of leadership that was quick and had road feel. Four barrel-1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28s could run the quarter mile in 14.8 seconds at 101 mph, but the small block of the shortage of low-end torque is multiplied with double quads, which is fed by sky high revolutions. Even falling into the clutches 4000 rpm mishap occurred in front of the line.

As Trans Am titles in 1968 y'69 showed, the Z28 is a road racer first, a second machine in the street. Drivers who understands her character bare knuckle-7199 purchased by 68 of them, and nearly tripled sales for the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 - a record that stood until 1978.

All were essentially the same: They had the iron block and head, lift solid-L72 427, Chevy linked to 425 hp, but Yenko evaluated more realistic-450; Hurst four-speed manual or automatic double door; heavy -- Posi duty 4.10:1; cowl-induction hood; heavy Z28 suspension F70xl4 tires, and other go-fast goodies. The package added about $ 800 to a base coupe, including $ 490 for the engine.

Chevy gave the norm COPO Camaros with dog-dish hubcaps and not external cards, nor the engine was identified as a 427. Yenko ordered his 15-inch wheels rally, most front roll bar, and 140 mph of speed, then they dressed in "sYc" (Yenko Super Car) and gang insign, and made available mags, meters, led , and other issues that could push the price above $ 4600. As delivered, Yenko Camaros become effort mid-13s. Most were equipped with headers and stains, even if street work, and thus recorded 11.94-second TA to 114 mph.
