Ford Mustang 1968

1968 Mustang

Mustang of 1968 was little changed from 67 counterpart. Most of the changes are subtle and improvements to the interior and exterior. New options included a 68 AM / FM stereo radio, rear window defogger (and fastback coupe only), re-designed power front disc brakes, and the all new 302 cid engine. The 302-4V, 230 hp engine replaced the Challenger 289 special in previous years. Not later than December 67, the 289 engine has been entirely replaced by the 302 version.
Other changes included the removal of the horizontal bar grille, the removal of the FORD letters in front of the hood, the simplification of the fourth panel ornamentation, and many security features. Due to increasing governmental regulations, the 1968 Mustang now included front and rear side marker lights, folding, mounted flush interior door pulls, and an energy-absorbing steering column. There were several "special region" models offered by different dealers. Two of the most notable were the special California, and the High Country special. Total production was 317,404 units 1968.

The nose for il'68 was restructured Shelby, which has continued to resemeble Ford Mustang with a little more aggressive. The front-end treatment was again made of fibre glass and the grid Opening conduct or Lucas or Marchal foglamps. The hood now used twin front hood scoop along with a series of rear hood louvers.

New Cobra emblems were added on the front fenders and the passenger side dashboard panel. The compartment of the console has had a significant higher Cobra. All Shelbys came with inertia-reel harnesses with the exception of convertible, which used a single padded bar.
Standard wheels on steel were Shelby with a style wheel cover observations. Optional wheels were ten races Shelby wheels that were cast in a different way and al'67 versions have a common interference ball if installed on un'67.

The GT350 lost some of its edge when the 289 high-performance has been replaced with the factory 302 V-8 using a Cobra intake aluminum and 600 cfm Holley carburetor. The 302 found in the GT350 is estimated at 250hp. Also found 302 Cobra is an oval air cleaner and valve covers Cobra. Functional Ram Air was an option on the GT350's, as was the Paxton Supercharger. Further fuel pressure gauges and had to be mounted on the console.
Police Interceptor 428ci V-8 rated at 360hp could again be found in the GT500's, this time coming only with a single carburetor Holley 715 cfm which was mounted on an aluminum manifold. Only a few GT500's bring 427 Low Riser engine that was available only with an automatic transmission. The letter "W" must be the original VIN for a factory installed 427.
When the 428 Cobra Jet engine became available nel'68, GT500KR replaced the GT500. It made 400hp, even though he received a rating of 335hp. The GT500KR conducted the same features found on the 1968 ½ Mustang Cobra Jet. The KRs came with Cobra Jet emblems on the fenders, dashboard, and the gas cap lid.All of them were functional Ram Air, which is not meant for Cobra aircleaner oval.

Then, on April 1, came 1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 428. It was based on the staid 428-cid big-engine car, but was greater valve heads and the race prepared-427's aspiration. He also had ram-air induction and a functional hood scoop. The scoop mated to a special air cleaner with a vacuum-implements the throttle air that funneled directly into the 735-cfm four-barrel Holley carburetor. Output was about 410 horses, but Ford is rated at 335 horses and an effort to calm agents and insurance rules dragstrip-maker.

The 428 has been offered in CJ Mustang fastbacks and coupes (and Ford Torino and Mercury Cyclone and Cougar models), with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic. The whole package costs about $ 500, including front disc brakes. The Equa-Loc differential ($ 79) and competition Handling Package ($ 62) were wise extra.

With 11.5 seconds-ETs to 120 mph, the factory team of eight specially prepared 1968 Ford Mustang 428 CJs obliterated everything in their Super Stock class al'68 NHRA Winternationals. The impact was less strong on the road. "The whole world can come to recognize this engine - 428 Cobra Jet - to pop a hood," said Motor Trend. Finally, thanks to the 1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 428, the competition is chasing Mustang's tail.
