Chevrolet Corvette 1960

1960 Corvette

The 1960 Corvette was virtually indistinguishable from 1959, but there have been some increases in power for the two motors. Lifts solid and higher 11.0:1 compression strengthened the most powerful 283 fuelie to 315 hp at 6200, a second version with hydraulic lifts for easier maintenance pumped out 275 hp at 5200 rpm. Because of these increases, the automatic transmission Powerglide was no longer available with the fuel injected engines - simply could not handle the torque. Carbureted engines remained more or less the same as before. The tamest was still the 230-hp single unit with four-barrel carburetor, followed by a double-quad CV-245 hydraulic-lift version and the solid-lifter-270 hp engine with twin four-barrel carbs.

Mechanical refinements for 1960 included new aluminum clutch housing for manual transmissions, which made it possible to lay the car 18 pounds, and aluminium radiators for cars running Duntov cam. A thermostatically controlled energy saving cooling fan is a new option, as has been long-haul, 24-gallon fuel tank. A large diameter front anti-roll bar, accompanied by a new rear bar were standard. These changes, plus an extra inch of the rear wheel travel and rebound, gave a smoother ride and more neutral handling.

Despite the transition from racing in favor of promoting Corvette as a smooth, without fuss touring car, there are still a lot of performance at a reasonable price options available for 1960. Apart from the 315-hp engine for $ 484.20, you can still order Positraction ($ 43.05) and the exchange rate to four ($ 188.30). The metallic brake linings (RPO 687) returns as an option for $ 26.90. A set of blackwall 6.70 X 15 nylon tyres cost only $ 15.75 (5.50 X 15 whitewalls remained standard).

At the beginning of the 1960 model year, Chevy cylinder heads offered by a cast aluminum alloy high silicon as an option for the two fuelie engines. Based on a design that has been tried before with the Corvette prototype SS runner from Sebring, in 1957, they kept the bag 11.0:1 compression feature improved, but intake and exhaust. The high silicon content prefigured blocking the construction of four-cylinder engine Vega a decade later, that has proved as troublesome. The head aluminium were good in theory but tends to deform if the engine overheated, and Chevy had quality control problems with the jets and quickly option has been withdrawn.

Loan credit voices of a new Corvette in the offing was the debut of a dramatic special track called Stingray, which was "privately" beaten by GM design chief Bill Mitchell. The fact that Mitchell was succeeded in that position on Harley Earl's retirement in 1958 convinced many observers that the Corvette Stingray was the shape of things to come for the America sports car. In some ways, it was.

Meanwhile, Bill Mitchell was already working to breathe new life into the existing Corvette styling, which had been on the road with its basic form since 1956. But even if you have not had a studio short of ideas, the Corvette would see relatively few changes to 1962. Chevrolet had other priorities, including the Corvair. Once again, the Corvette should soldier with relatively small changes.

Even so, the 1961-62 models are regarded as the best since the Corvette "classic" 1957. Mitchell performed a tasteful exterior makeover, which took a step back from chromium laden 1958-60 models. This body redesign accompanying were assorted mechanical changes aimed at improving efficiency and higher performance. The result was two years worth vintage Corvette that as the ultimate expression of the 1953 original concept.
