Chevrolet Corvette 1962

1962 Corvette

With even greater power and also looks cleaner, Corvette ranks as perhaps the most desirable Corvette between 1957 and 1963. The base price of the car broke the $ 4000 barrier for the first time, to $ 4038. A heater was finally made standard for 1962, more than deny the increase in prices compared to the previous model, but it could be eliminated if you wish, which was designed for purposes of travel.

The most obvious was the deletion chrome bodyside outline around the caves, which also shed their triple chrome accent lance in favour of more conservative applique ribbed aluminum, which were finished in the black for subtlety. Omitting the bays' optional two-tone treatment only reinforced this aspect more cohesive. Other elements were equally fine. The previous grid mesh silver and its accompanying cuttings were now finished in black, as was the background of the trunklid medallion. Banda close whitewalls that were in vogue years and looked great on the Corvette. The only place where any form of decoration was added was the rocker panels, which were recently adorned with ribbed anodized aluminum-Greek.

Under the bonnet, the engine 283 has been bored out and to bring its cylinder dimensions 4.00 x 3.25 inches and moving up to 327 cid. The small-block V-8 will continue in this way, as the Corvette main muscle through 1965. It was muscle. The basic 327 pumped out 250 hp and in good shape could create an explosive 360 hp. The deepest breath-327 block prompted a small but important change in Rochester-injection system of fuel, and heavy-duty bearings largest ports, and a longer duration camshaft were fitted to all but the base engine from 250 hp. The solid-Duntov cam lift was specified for now the most powerful of the three carbureted engines, now up to 340 hp (as well as continuing in the top fuelie). Both these races close 11.25:1 compression 10.5:1 respect for the basic and step-up from 300 hp engines. The last two were perhaps the best choices for all-around use, which offers more than enough power more simplicity and ease of maintenance of hydraulic and a single four-barrel carburetor tappets.

To this end, the annoying twin four-barrel carbs were now completely gone, replaced by large, single four Carters barrel. Power peak in the top two versions came screaming 6000 rpm - pretty high for a pushrod power - while the 250 - and 300-hp versions ran out of steam at 4400 rpm and 5000, respectively. The last two engines were available only with Powerglide optional, which was treated to a weight-saving aluminum case like that given four-speed manual the previous year.

The extra power and torque of the largest 327 V-8 translated into really fierce and 0-60 mph acceleration quarter miles: The routine four-speed/fuelie hit the quarter mile mark in 15 seconds or less at a speed of 100 mph or more evidence in the magazine. And with the appropriate options, the Corvette has yet to win a production class runner. Also in 1962, The Sports Car Club of America's A-sample was Production Dr. Dick Thompson. The Corvette has been a serious competitor, even with only minor changes. Don Yenko, for example, took the SCCA's B-Production title that season.

Corvette, 1962 marked the end of an era for the America sports car, with the first completely new model in its history now a simple model years away. Still, the 1962 has been a model of transition and which introduced the venerable 327 V-8, which should be carried over to the new design. While the car harkened back to its roots as a 1953-1962 was faster, better managed, looked handsomer, and was most civilized of any previous Corvette, but retained much of the charm of the original concept roadster. Sales on the year jumped nearly 40 percent to 14531 units, and the Corvette was firmly in the black with regard to the bottom line GM was concerned.

It was not rest on our laurels, o. The first completely redesigned model and its history would soon come to be realized, as the epitome of plastic body Chevy sports car, and the designations "Corvette" and "Stingray" was to become synonymous.

Chevrolet Corvette 1961

1961 Corvette

A subsequent design freshened was more pronounced for foreign exchange Corvette 1961, a sort of "duck tail" design that had been lifted almost intact from Mitchell Stingray athlete and is also used by its XP-700 show car. In addition to improving the aesthetics, the new post-practice bonus: the luggage space (as is) increased by around 20 per cent. The new tail also sported a pair of small round taillamps on each side of the center of the license plate recess, in addition to a modest trunklid creaseline longitudinal passing through the traditional, large, round Corvette medallion. Simple chrome bumperettes bracketed tuition, which in turn acquired a small "arc" bumper. And for the first time, dual exhaust exited below the body rather than through it or bumper guards.

Finally main cabin, Mitchell developed a cleaner version of the existing four lamp nose. The headlights are now bezels painted body color, brand and vertical teeth were abandoned in favour of a fine grid of horizontal insert argent silver finish. The round medallion gave way to separate capital letters detailing the car's name, crowned by a larger version of the Corvette crossed the flagship of the flags. The 1961 is available with the latest Corvette bodyside coves in a contrasting tone, a mere $ 16.15 option that most buyers ordered. Even outside the fiberglass enhanced the quality of construction, as the self-adjustment of the target-and 1961 was the best yet.

A heater is still optional for 1961, however, a price of $ 102.25. While air conditioning, power steering, power brakes and yet were not offered, the "Wonder Bar" in the search for AM radio signals remained available, as is the Positraction limited-slip differential, the "comprehensive" whitewall pneumatic, electric windows, and power - Operados top. Nearly three quarters of all clients that year Corvette gladly paid $ 188.30 for the four-speed manual transmission, which is now clad in aluminum, cutting 15 pounds heft of the car.

During the two-seat cockpit, the only change for 1961 was a more narrow tunnel transmission that offers a bit more interior room. Four interior is available color schemes: black, red, fawn, and blue.

Mechanically, the 1961 Corvette is very similar to the model 1960. However, an aluminum radiator ranks of the former copper-central unit, which not only improved the cooling capacity of around 10 percent, but weighed half as much as before - which is another weight-saving improvements. Side-mount tank coolant expansion has been added as a change of operation. Engine options are basically carried over. There are still five versions of the Chevy recognized 283-cubic-inch small block V-8: 230, 245, 270, 275 and 315 hp, the last two are fuel injected. The three-speed manual remains the standard gearbox, but now is offered with a wider range of the axis ratios. Powerglide automatic continued as optional, but not now available with three engines hotter.

Even with the softer 283 and Powerglide, the 1961 Corvette was fast by any standard: Magazine testers recorded 0-60 mph acceleration between 6.7 and 7.7 seconds. Top speed automatic with the listed 109 mph and was limited mainly by gearing. The four lacked the speed lasts long legs ratio of most modern five-speed manual, and yet many of the fuel-injected models and twin four-barrel could reach more than 130 mph.

Corvette Although still not have independent rear suspension, as well as some expensive European models, this does not appear to damage the vehicle, either on the street or on the track. Testers sang the praises of tampering with the virtues of 1961, and almost none of them discern any deficiencies. By the standards of that day, the Corvette has become one of the most roadworthy car in the world.

Chevrolet Corvette 1960

1960 Corvette

The 1960 Corvette was virtually indistinguishable from 1959, but there have been some increases in power for the two motors. Lifts solid and higher 11.0:1 compression strengthened the most powerful 283 fuelie to 315 hp at 6200, a second version with hydraulic lifts for easier maintenance pumped out 275 hp at 5200 rpm. Because of these increases, the automatic transmission Powerglide was no longer available with the fuel injected engines - simply could not handle the torque. Carbureted engines remained more or less the same as before. The tamest was still the 230-hp single unit with four-barrel carburetor, followed by a double-quad CV-245 hydraulic-lift version and the solid-lifter-270 hp engine with twin four-barrel carbs.

Mechanical refinements for 1960 included new aluminum clutch housing for manual transmissions, which made it possible to lay the car 18 pounds, and aluminium radiators for cars running Duntov cam. A thermostatically controlled energy saving cooling fan is a new option, as has been long-haul, 24-gallon fuel tank. A large diameter front anti-roll bar, accompanied by a new rear bar were standard. These changes, plus an extra inch of the rear wheel travel and rebound, gave a smoother ride and more neutral handling.

Despite the transition from racing in favor of promoting Corvette as a smooth, without fuss touring car, there are still a lot of performance at a reasonable price options available for 1960. Apart from the 315-hp engine for $ 484.20, you can still order Positraction ($ 43.05) and the exchange rate to four ($ 188.30). The metallic brake linings (RPO 687) returns as an option for $ 26.90. A set of blackwall 6.70 X 15 nylon tyres cost only $ 15.75 (5.50 X 15 whitewalls remained standard).

At the beginning of the 1960 model year, Chevy cylinder heads offered by a cast aluminum alloy high silicon as an option for the two fuelie engines. Based on a design that has been tried before with the Corvette prototype SS runner from Sebring, in 1957, they kept the bag 11.0:1 compression feature improved, but intake and exhaust. The high silicon content prefigured blocking the construction of four-cylinder engine Vega a decade later, that has proved as troublesome. The head aluminium were good in theory but tends to deform if the engine overheated, and Chevy had quality control problems with the jets and quickly option has been withdrawn.

Loan credit voices of a new Corvette in the offing was the debut of a dramatic special track called Stingray, which was "privately" beaten by GM design chief Bill Mitchell. The fact that Mitchell was succeeded in that position on Harley Earl's retirement in 1958 convinced many observers that the Corvette Stingray was the shape of things to come for the America sports car. In some ways, it was.

Meanwhile, Bill Mitchell was already working to breathe new life into the existing Corvette styling, which had been on the road with its basic form since 1956. But even if you have not had a studio short of ideas, the Corvette would see relatively few changes to 1962. Chevrolet had other priorities, including the Corvair. Once again, the Corvette should soldier with relatively small changes.

Even so, the 1961-62 models are regarded as the best since the Corvette "classic" 1957. Mitchell performed a tasteful exterior makeover, which took a step back from chromium laden 1958-60 models. This body redesign accompanying were assorted mechanical changes aimed at improving efficiency and higher performance. The result was two years worth vintage Corvette that as the ultimate expression of the 1953 original concept.

Chevrolet Corvette 1959

1959 Corvette

For the 1959 Corvette, styling chromium ocupado'58 was dropped considerably. The often Clouded decklid false hood louvers and chrome bars now can be found anywhere. Otherwise, there are few changes from the previous model year.Interior alterations are so small and so effective. There were replacement armrests and door handles, added a shelf underneath the bar to grab passengers extra space for stowing small item, and reformed at least seats now offer sheets lateral support. Sunvisors adds a new option, and instead of concave lenses flat instrument (to reduce reflections) were added to the instrument panel, a T-handle lock for the manual transmission was included to prevent accidentally a driver's participation back off.

Powertrain options were again unchanged, but in 1959 introduced a less tillage of the major benefits: In addition to the rear-trailing Radio bars that helped contribute to a walk a little softer and considerably less extreme rear direction on uneven surfaces. The bars also helped to counteract the rear axle-windup, which was an unfortunate byproduct of a problem with the explosive torque produced by the most powerful engines, and the RPO 684 heavy brakes and suspension option was even stiffer springs - all of which For better management.

Most Corvettes can shoot through the quarter mile in less than 15 seconds, and 0-60 mph times of less than eight seconds were typical. Road & Track clocked a 290-hp engine fuelie of 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and the quarter mile mark in 14.5 seconds to 96 mph. Top speed is listed at 128 mph 4.11:1 with the short end of the transmission.

Brakes also received some attention, with new optional sintered metal coating (RPO 686) developed by GM-Delco Moraine division. A price of $ 26.90 a simple, the choice of three pairs of lining segments that are riveted to the primary shoes and five pairs of segments a little thicker for secondary shoes. Drums were finless with this option, but flared at the ends open for improved cooling. The sintered brake linings become less hard Cerametallic the necessary material and much less for heating to provide maximum braking.

At this point about Honda is working on a new and even more radical concept of America's sports car - the so-called Q-Corvette. This was a much smaller and lighter two-seater coupe with very simplified style, independent rear suspension, and a rear transaxle derived from being developed for the new Chevy engine rear-compact, 1960 Corvair. Unfortunately, the model-Q would be another bad start on the road toward a truly new second-generation Corvette.

The total production of 9670 units for the 1959 model year, a slight increase over the previous year. Chevy was still not make a lot of money in Corvettes, but is not losing any property. The sales continued their steady if modest increase for 1960, above the psychologically important 10,000-unit level exactly 261 cars.

Chevrolet Corvette 1958

1958 Corvette

The 1958 Corvette not only seemed heavier than its predecessor, but it is. The car curb weight of 3000 pounds and exceeded for the first time, which was about 200 pounds of the modelo'57. Much of this was due to 9.2 inches long and 2.3 inches wide added added, bringing its overall dimensions of 177.2 and 72.8 inches, respectively.

Moreover, the new design offers a couple of minor improvements: Bumpers, for example, are no longer attached to the body, but the structure, secured by long hiatus significantly better than providing protection. The painting was switched to acrylic enamel lacquer.

Major modifications to the interior of the 1958 Corvette were equally important but ultimately more successful. Stung by criticism of the former model of the awkward instrument panel design, interior designers made sure that every dial (except the clock) was in front of the driver.

While el'58 Vette may have been flashier that some purists would have liked, there are few complaints with his overall performance, as the engine of the line of 1957 returned with few changes. The upper part remains high compression engine, the fuel is injected, Duntov cam-283-now have an official 290 horsepower at 6200 rpm.

A similar agreement with two carburetors continued at 270 hp, but few buyers opted for this version. In fact, the basis of 230 hp V-8 accounted for nearly half of los'58 engine installations, and only 1500 vehicles with fuel injection - 1000 with the configuration of 290-hp version of the 500 with 250 hp .

However, fans determined the speed could still manage a career of nearly ready Chevrolet Corvette their local distributors, and at a reasonable price. Even the hottest engine ($ 484.20), Positraction ($ 48.45), high-powered metal brakes and suspension ($ 780.10), four-speed manual transmission ($ 188.30) added only about $ 1500 to los'58 's reasonable base price of 3591 dollars. This is a remarkable value given that the 'Vette was more than a match for the likes of Jaguar, Porsche, and other higher-priced European performers. Even outside of the table of exotic animals as Ferrari were not much beyond that in the performance.

Magazines cars were mostly positive about los'58 's mechanical, continues to praise the performance of the car and handling characteristics. Sprints of 0-60 mph and less than 8 seconds and a top speed of about 125 mph with the 250-hp fuelie / four-speed configuration reported. However, the performance of mind "Cerametallic" brakes in the aforementioned package heavy duty were cited as not for the faint of heart, since they tend to pull sharply to one side or the other warmed up enough. Corbetas delivered with this package apparently carrying a sticker on the windshield that warned, "This car is not for use on the street."

Go to the track, thanks to the efforts of Jim Jeffords and his "Purple People Angeles, Corvette again won the SCCA B-Production of the crown in 1958. Jim Rathmann and Dick Doane took the GT class at Sebring this year, and veteran Ak Miller won the sports car class at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with a time of 15 minutes, 23.7 seconds.

None of these victories were mentioned in Corvette advertising, however, as Chevrolet was officially performance shying away from peddling in the wake of the Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers' anti-racing "edict of the previous year. The Corvette now copy of the notice things highlighted as a "cyclone silk of a V-8" and a "beautifully compact body" with "a chassis that clings to the road like a panther stalking."

Despite the stylistic changes somewhat extreme, even mocking the critics today, the Corvette'58 turned a profit for the first time in its brief existence. Model year 1957 production was well above the record level, with a total of 9168 units. As a result, the 'Vette is one of the few national models to note that the increase in sales in recession-plagued season, the others being merely Rambler, Lincoln, Ford and the new-for-'58 Thunderbird of four seats.

Bill Mitchell, once admitted that he and his associates at GM Styling in the fifties were too willing to "spoon chromium with a paddle." Fortunately are more savers with the Corvette than any other car at the business park, and it is to her credit that Chevrolet style ocupado'58 was dropped considerably from that of another little-1959 model unchanged.

The 1956 Corvette was not only fresh, but look for a big improvement over the first generation in almost every aspect. While the changes were more evolutionary that revolutionary, all of the old version were removed items lower and higher are now more stressed. At $ 3120, the price had jumped by a nominal amount - about $ 200 - over the previous year (V-8 equipped) model.

A clear "face" was seen as the most attractive of the first-generation design, and the next generation of visage looked even more attractive. Wire screens had become the "eyes" appear veiled in 1953-55 models - inappropriate, it was thought, for a "man's" car - so the headlights were discovered and made their breaks.

Complementing this was a larger version of the Corvette emblem round of the nose, with the racy crossed reason for the flags that survives to this day. The original front grille, which formed the "mouth" and its magnificent chrome "teeth", were unchanged from the 1955 model.

Rear-end style revisions to 1956 were equally tasteful executed. El'53-'55 's finny defenses and jet-pod taillamps were cut up artificiality French contoured curves to match curvature back cover, and new taillights were neatly "frenched" above a vertical bumperette each fender. The trunklid "shadow box" and ruled out the plate was moved below the trunk opening, which is flanked by horizontal bumperettes with little inboard bullets. The result was a soft, gently curved tail, with the defenses Protuberans only slightly.

The bodyside "bays" because it is going to call, gave the 1956 Corvette real style unique personality. It also helped to correct the slab-sided look that has led some to mock the first generation of design as a plastic tub. " Even with the coves of the Straits schemes chromium - one of the few last-minute changes made to trim the prototype production - the sidewalls are clean and attractive.

Or Incidentally, the car is now largely devoid of stylistic tricks, but spent two obvious: vent imitations scoops top defenses near the front of the windshield (originally designed to be functional - for ventilation cowl - but cost considerations rendered them merely decorative) can be substituted-false-knockoff centres wheel (wheel of the car is covered entirely new and more ornate than before). Those wheels covers, however, remains standard issue until 1963, and since then have become some of the best-known wheel covers in the history of the automobile.

What's more, the 1956 Corvette are not only better than its predecessor, but it worked better, too, and was an all-around more "livable" car. The fussy side curtains are gone forever, replaced by the good cheer of the glass door. Even the power window lifts were available at extra cost. The addition of outside handles ended the hassle of having to arrive at the cabin to open a door.

The Corvette convertible upper level fits tighter and now offered in beige and white, in addition to the question of black cloth; design wise it is more integrated and rounded at the rear echo the stern quarter of design. A power-operated top is offered for the first time as an option to $ 170.60, although it was technically only semiautomatic - had to be unlatched and partially collapsed manually times before pressing the button. Capping the new design is a rigid removable taken directly from the production-based prototype seen at the 1954 show Motorama. The rigid an extra cost of $ 215.20, even though they may be exchanged by the hood for free. The new factory hard, obviously, it bends, and with its rear window, which provides much better vision on the shoulder of the hood.

With the exception of new waffle-1955, keeping the "twin cowl" dashboard with its uncomfortable about everything width instrument spread. A new spring spoke steering wheel is added, and the heater was changed from the recirculation of age to a new type of "fresh air" after the first production version of 145 cars were built. The posts remained separate, flat-bottomed buckets matters to be in name only. The passenger seat could be adjusted forwards and backwards, for the first time, and seat belts were newly available as a dealer-installed accessory kit. Then-vanguard of the search transistorized radio signal is another new option is available for $ 198.90.

Chevrolet Corvette 1953

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car that has been manufactured by Chevrolet from 1953. Today is built on an assembly plant of General Motors in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but in the past it was built in Flint, Mich., and St. Louis, Missouri. It was the first all-American sports car built by the American automaker. The National Corvette Museum and annual National Corvette Homecoming also found in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

While the style of a car can be as important for some as well that the car goes, it was not until 1927, when General Motors hired designer Harley Earl, the style and design of cars became important for manufacturers American cars. What Henry Ford did for automobile manufacturing principles, Harley Earl made car design.Taking his name from the corvette, a small, anti-maneuverable frigate (credit for the name goes to Myron Scott), the first Corvettes were virtually handbuilt in Flint, Michigan Chevrolet at the Center for Customer Delivery, now an academic building at the University of Kettering. The outer body is made of fiberglass after the revolution, elected in part by contributions steel remnants of war.

Under this new body is radically Chevrolet standard components, including the "Blue Flame" in line six cylinder engine trucks, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, drum brakes and Chevrolet regular car line. Although the engine production increased slightly, thanks to a unique triple carburetor to the intake of Corvette, the performance of the car has been determinedly.

There have been six generations of the Corvette to date, sometimes called C1 through C6.

C1 (1953-1962)

1953 Corvette

The first generation is the most commonly by fans as an "axis solid", based on the fact that the independent rear suspension (IRS) was not available until 1963. The first generation began in 1953 and ended in 1962.

With production limited by the fact that all of them were built and assembled side, the 1953 Corvette at 300 is the rarest and most sought after year.

The 1953 Corvette highlighted a body of fiberglass innovators who did much for a car light, which can be more easily molded into complex shapes construction vehicles traditional steel. Despite some initial production problems, the car was a strong performer.
